Government Museum

Situated along Pantheon Road in Egmore, the Government Museum proudly represents Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu. Established in 1851, it occupies 16.25 acres and features six buildings and 46 art galleries. As India's second-oldest museum, it boasts an array of exhibits covering fields such as Archaeology, Numismatics, Zoology, Natural History, Sculpture, Palm Leaf Manuscripts, & Amravathi Paintings. Its collection of Roman antiquities is the largest outside of Europe, making it a unique repository worldwide. This museum is highly recommended for tourists and should be integrated into travel plans because of its cultural & historical significance. History :Originating in Nungambakkam in 1851 before moving to its current site in 1854, this museum was the first to be sponsored by the government in India. It began with a modest collection of 1000 geological specimens donated by the Madras Literary Society. The collection expanded over time, necessitating several renovations, including six new buildings, a lecture hall & a museum theatre. The architectural styles of Indo-Saracenic alongside Gothic–Byzantine, Rajput, Mughal & South Indian Deccani make up the museum's structure. A noteworthy feature of this complex is the Connemara Library, which features stained-glass workshops & ornate decorations. It receives every publication produced in India as one of only four such libraries nationwide and serves as a depository library for UN documents. Originally a single hall, it now stands as one of India’s largest libraries with an extensive reference section. Another highlight is the 19th-century Museum Theatre, in the Italianate style, which has hosted many cultural events, including Shakespeare’s plays, since its inception. Additionally, Chennai’s first zoo, established here in 1855, has been operating from Vandalore since 1985. The Centenary Exhibition Hall commemorates 100 years since its establishment, next to an area designated for children’s exhibitions. From 2004 onwards, this site has also served as a Manuscript Convention Centre, attracting at least 1,000 daily visitors. For those curious about ancestral lifestyles, this place holds many answers about our forebearers' lives. Getting There:By Flight- The nearest airport is Chennai airport, just 18km away. By Train- From Chennai Central railway station, it's only about 3.4km. By Road- Conveniently accessible from adjoining areas due to well-connected roads. The Government Museum not only preserves treasured artefacts but also continuously educates and entices a wide audience; truly embodying its status as a cornerstone of cultural heritage."

Fort St. George Church

Explore the Historic Charm of Fort St. George Church in Chennai This charming church is tucked away in Fort St. George, located in Chennai, which is the heartbeat of Tamil Nadu. Styled after British design, it stands as one of the oldest buildings in India, dubbed the “Westminster Abbey of the East”. It's really a sight to behold, showcasing rich history and culture within its ancient walls. So here’s a little story for you: Back in the day (we're talking about 1678!), Sir StreynsHam Master from the East India Company, felt that Chennai needed a chapel. Starting on Lady Day, March 25th, he kicked off construction. Fast forward to October 28th, 1680, and voila! The building was ready, impressive, right? It’s like they built it overnight! During the Second Carnatic War between 1758 & 1759, this sturdy church with its bomb-proof roof doubled as barracks and a storage spot for grain. Let’s chat about its design: The blueprint might have been dreamt up by Edward Foule or William Dixon – both master gunners at Fort St. George. This architectural gem features two broad aisles leading to a striking focal point that extends about 12 feet, forming a sanctum (fancy word for a sacred place). Near this central point sits a spacious gallery supported by sturdy Burma teak pillars, once the cool hangout spot for the Governor. Oh! And they added some snazzy staircases in 1761 to jazz things up. Jumping to 1884: they gave the place a little facelift. They tweaked the gallery & even plopped on a new building. The tower that pops up at one end wasn't part of the original plan but was added later, around the close of the 18th century, per Sir John Goldsborough's orders. The steeple? That came with the dawn of the 19th century, along with two handy vestries. Peeking Inside: It’s pretty spacious – about 86 feet wide & 56 feet deep with outside walls nearly 4 feet thick. These chunky walls help protect against attacks & probably some eavesdropping too. A standout feature is definitely its bomb-proof ceiling, also about 4 feet thick. Altar & Churchyard scoop: Centre stage at the altar features an unsigned painting depicting The Last Supper, believed to mimic Raphael's style, and it has quite a story involving British troops! Originally, there were no graves around when it was first built. Those who passed away rested initially in what was basically a guava orchard next door to where the governor chilled out. Eventually, due to concerns over space & respectability, burials moved to the island's north-west side. Big events: Oh yes, a lot happens here! From weddings like that of Robert Clive from St.George and Elihu Yale (yup, that Yale!), who donated Big bucks to start Yale University stateside, this spot has seen it all, joyous occasions and sad goodbyes marked by elegant memorial plaques and monuments. One famous bird artist named Elizabeth Gwillim also rests here now. Getting there isn't tricky at all: By Flight: If you’re winging into town, Chennai airport is about 21km away. By Train: Prefer tracks? Chennai Central Station is super close at just about 3km distance. By Road: Driving over? Great roads connect from surrounding cities straight to Fort St George! Isn’t history just thrilling? Come check out this historic jewel when you’re around!

Kalakshetra Foundation

Spread over 100 acres, the Kalakshetra Foundation stands as a tribute to Rukmani Devi Arundale, a pioneering figure in South Indian Arts and Culture. Nestled along the seafront in Adyar, Chennai, this campus holds a revered spot on Tamil Nadu’s cultural map. Rukmani Devi Arundale dreamt of creating a space where youth would not only pursue arts but also develop a commendable attitude toward life and contribute significantly to the nation. Under the mentorship of Dr. Annie Besant and Dr. George Arundale, she established the Kalakshetra Foundation in 1936. Quickly, it garnered national & international recognition, attracting students, teachers, dancers, and musicians from around the world keen to be part of its innovative educational approach. The primary focus at Kalakshetra is to promote Indian arts through comprehensive artistic training. Recognised by the Government of India as an "Institute of National Importance," the campus is a must-visit for anyone touring South India. You can explore its offerings between 8:30 AM and 11:30 AM, experiencing art unfold in serene surroundings. Kalakshetra does not just offer college courses in Dance, Music, and Visual Arts; it also runs two schools within its grounds, as Rukmani Arundale firmly believed that true human development requires a harmonious blend of arts and education. Students from age seven are immersed in various art forms, staying in hostel facilities that reflect India’s traditional “Gurukulam” system, which emphasises simplicity, discipline, and reverence for all life forms. How to Reach Kalakshetra? By Air: The nearest airport is Chennai Airport. From there, it’s a short drive of about 16 kilometers, an under-an-hour journey in typical traffic. By Train: Situated equally from Chennai’s airport and its main railway stations, Chennai Egmore and Chennai Central, a car ride will get you to Kalakshetra in less than an hour. By Road: If you're coming via Asia's largest bus terminal at Koyambedu on the 100-feet road, expect to reach within an hour. Visiting this culturally vibrant campus should definitely be on your list. It is a journey of your soul, body and mind.

Valluvar Kottam

Tamil, a language boasting over 2000 years of history, serves as the root for several languages, including Sanskrit, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi, and even Russian. It is celebrated for its significant cultural heritage. The quintessential Tamil text, the Tirukkural, has been translated into more than 80 languages worldwide. Authored by Tiruvalluvar, a revered saint and philosopher who resided in Mylapore in southern Chennai, this text is a treasure trove of wisdom advocating for moral and ethical conduct essential for a fulfilling life. The Tirukkural divides its teachings into three primary sections encompassing 133 chapters and a total of 1330 verses. Remarkably consistent in structure, each verse contains seven words spread across two lines. Addressing life's entire spectrum from birth to death, and even beyond, this literary work guides readers through personal morality, the pursuit of a respectable livelihood & the foundational norms for personal life. Adhering to its lessons almost guarantees a divine quality of life. In recognition of Tiruvalluvar’ s contributions & to ensure his teachings endure through generations, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi commissioned the construction of Valluvar Kottam in 1976. This monument mirrors the design of a temple chariot similar to that found in the Thiruvarur Temple and features a life-size statue of Tiruvalluvar. Visitors to Valluvar Kottam are often astounded by the bas-reliefs inscribed with all 1330 verses. Those who linger in this sanctuary can engage deeply with these enduring moral instructions. Valluvar Kottam stands at the junction of Kodambakkam Highway bridge & College Road in Nungambakkam, Chennai. A visit offers an enlightening glimpse into a profound heritage documented two millennia ago at this distinguished site.
