Kanchipuram, often hailed as the Golden City of Thousand Temples or the Silk City, lies within Tamil Nadu, roughly 75 kilometres from Chennai. This city holds the distinction of having the most temples in India, with Hindu places of worship prominently dotting its landscape. Its connectivity is ensured through well-maintained road and rail networks, while the closest airport is situated in Chennai.
The city isn’t just famous for its religious structures. It’s equally renowned for producing exquisite handwoven silk sarees that captivate many with their charm, earning Kanchipuram the nickname "The Silk City."
Notably, Kanchipuram hosts Asia's largest International library at the Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathy Viswa Mahavidyalaya, a deemed university. Additionally, it's a significant historical site where Saint Adi Shankaracharya established his Episcopal seat (Kamakoti Peetam). The city also served as an important Buddhist centre during the reign of Mauryan Emperor Ashoka and is the birthplace of C.N. Annadurai, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
The cityscape is graced by the River Palar, a pivotal water source alongside various seasonal lakes and ponds that are vibrant during the monsoon.
In April-May, it experiences hot temperatures ranging from 38°C to 30°C, while in other months it enjoys milder weather from 20°C to 29 °C. Therefore, the summer season is not recommended for visiting here due to the warmer weather.
The peak season to visit here is from October to February. The weather is delightful for sightseeing and outdoor activities, such as temple visits. However, peak season also means heavy crowds.
Alternatively, you can visit during the monsoon season, which spans from June to September. The surroundings become lush green with moderate temperature and humidity. But the rainy season is likely to disrupt your travel at time so a weather forecast check is recommended.
