Best Time to Visit Ahmedabad

• October-February: Winter is the ideal season to visit Ahmedabad. October to February offers pleasant weather and comfortable sightseeing. Temperatures remain cool and ideal for walking tours and heritage visits.

• July-September: Monsoon arrives from July to September. Light rains refresh the landscape, and the Sabarmati Riverfront looks beautiful. Budget travellers prefer this time due to fewer crowds. Nature lovers enjoy nearby bird sanctuaries during the monsoon.
• March-June: Summer lasts from March to June. Temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius or higher. Sightseeing becomes difficult in the afternoons. Museums and indoor attractions remain comfortable.

How to Reach Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is easily accessible by all modes of transport, i.e., by air, rail and road over the whole of India.

• By Air:
  Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport offers regular domestic and international flight services between Ahmedabad and major cities in India and abroad, including flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai.
• By Rail:
  Ahmedabad Junction Railway Station is the busiest railway station in western India. It is well-connected to major cities across India, including Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, and Kolkata.
• By Road:
  Ahmedabad is served by several national highways that connect it to cities throughout Gujarat and to adjoining states. NH48 connects Ahmedabad to both Mumbai and Delhi by road. All the state highways that connect to their respective cities provide direct route access to both Gandhinagar and Vadodara by highway.

Best Places to Visit in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad offers heritage monuments, lakes, temples, museums, and nature excursions. The city provides diverse sightseeing experiences.

Sabarmati Ashram was Mahatma Gandhi's home from 1917 to 1930 and the starting point of the Dandi Salt March.

Adalaj Stepwell is a five-story octagonal well built in 1499, carved on every level and several degrees cooler at the bottom.

Sabarmati Riverfront offers 11 km of landscaped promenade along both banks, best walked in the evening.

Sarkhej Roza is a 15th-century mosque and tomb complex around a stepped tank, often called the Acropolis of Ahmedabad.

Sidi Saiyyed Mosque is famous for its stone lattice window called the Tree of Life. The carving represents Indo-Islamic craftsmanship.

Bhadra Fort reflects the city’s medieval history. The nearby Bhadrakali Temple attracts devotees daily.

Kankaria Lake is a popular recreation destination. Visitors enjoy boating, zoo visits, toy train rides, and evening walks.

Science City Ahmedabad attracts families and students. Interactive exhibits make learning enjoyable.

Things to do in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad rewards travellers who slow down. The old city in particular is best seen on foot, since its pols, the walled residential clusters, are too narrow for anything else.

Take the morning heritage walk. The official walk run by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation starts at Swaminarayan Temple in Kalupur at 8am and ends at Jama Masjid around two hours later. It winds through the pols, past carved wooden havelis and bird feeders that have stood for generations. This is the single best introduction to the city.

Visit the Calico Museum of Textiles. One of the finest textile collections in the world, housed in a 19th-century haveli. Entry is by advance booking only and numbers are capped daily, so arrange this before you arrive rather than on the day.

Cycle or walk the riverfront. Eleven kilometres of promenade along both banks of the Sabarmati, with a dedicated cycle track and boat rides from the lower level. Evenings are the best time.

Eat your way through Manek Chowk. A jewellery market by day and a street food court from about 9pm until the early hours. Pav bhaji, kulfi, and the city's famous cheese sandwiches.

See a Garba night during Navratri. If your trip falls in September or October, the whole city dances for nine nights. Public grounds host thousands of participants, and visitors are welcome to join.

Fly kites in January. Uttarayan on 14 January, turns the sky over the old city into something worth seeing from a rooftop. The International Kite Festival runs alongside it.

Take a day trip to Adalaj or Modhera. Adalaj Stepwell is 18 km away. The Sun Temple at Modhera is around 100 km and pairs well with Rani ki Vav at Patan, a UNESCO site.

Shopping

Textiles are the reason to shop here. Ahmedabad built its wealth on cotton mills, and the craft traditions around it are still active.

Law Garden Night Market is the best-known spot for mirror-work embroidery, chaniya cholis and wall hangings. Prices are negotiable and expected to be.

Manek Chowk handles gold and silver jewellery during the day, with over a hundred established shops.

What to buy: Bandhani tie-dye fabric, Patola silk from Patan, mirror-work and Kutchi embroidery, block-printed textiles, brass and copper items, and Gujarati handicrafts.

Where else to look: Gurjari, the Gujarat State Handicrafts emporium, for fixed-price authentic pieces. CG Road and SG Highway malls for contemporary shopping.
