• Remove shoes and socks before entering all temples, shrines, and many guesthouses. This includes Buddhist temples, Hindu kovils, and mosques
• Cover your shoulders and knees at all religious sites. Carry a light scarf or sarong in your bag throughout your Sri Lanka trip
• Face Buddha statues when photographing, standing with your back to a statue for a selfie is considered deeply disrespectful
• Ask permission before photographing monks, local people, or religious ceremonies, especially in rural areas

Avoid This

• Do not point feet toward Buddha statues, monks, or elderly people; this is deeply offensive in Sri Lankan culture
• Do not consume alcohol near temple complexes or during Buddhist poya (full moon) days; alcohol sales are legally restricted on poya days
• Photographs with Buddha statues in a mocking or irreverent pose can lead to legal prosecution under Sri Lanka's Buddhist Temporalities Ordinance, which is taken extremely seriously
• Do not touch or attempt to pet wild elephants or encourage unregulated elephant interactions outside licensed sanctuaries
