Ilulissat is Greenland´s most famous tourist destination on the west coast of the country. It is often referred to as "The City of Icebergs." The vibrant town has 5,000 residents and is located 350 km (about 220 miles) north of the Arctic Circle. Ilulissat is located next to the World Heritage designated Icefjord of Ilulissat (Kangia) and is fed by the Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the fastest and most active glaciers in the world, by calving 40 million tons of ice per day into the fjord. In Greenlandic, the name "Ilulissat" means "icebergs."
Ilulissat provides visitors access to the Arctic wilderness of Disko Bay, where visitors can view magnificent icebergs along the shoreline or by boat. In Ilulissat, visitors can experience ancient Inuit culture (over 4,000 years old) and modern colourful Greenlandic culture together. In summer, visitors have 24 hours of daylight for exploration. In winter, visitors can experience the brilliant Northern Lights and a vibrant culture around sled dogs.
