The Story

Chet Singh Ghat - The Fortress Ghat

History turned, briefly and violently, at this fortified ghat.

The sandstone fortress walls rising over this southern ghat belonged to Raja Chet Singh, the 18th-century ruler of Banaras. In 1781 it was the scene of a dramatic confrontation with the British under Warren Hastings.
Sandstone bastions still keep watch over the southern reach.
Today its bastions and water-gates make a romantic, layered silhouette best appreciated from the river, a reminder of the riverfront's role in the political history of north India.
