The Story

Tulsi Ghat - The Poet's Steps

The great retelling of the Ramayana was composed on these very steps.

Originally Lolark Ghat, this southern ghat was renamed for the 16th-century poet-saint Goswami Tulsidas, who lived here while composing the Ramcharitmanas - the beloved Awadhi retelling of the Ramayana.
From these steps, a poet gave the Ramayana to the people.
His house, manuscripts and akhara survive nearby, and the ghat remains the cradle of the city's centuries-old Ramlila theatre and a centre for the revival of classical Banaras culture.
