The Lord of Rama or Ramanathaswamy Temple is a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva to absolve the sins committed during the Ramayana War at Lanka. The temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. Praying in all those temples would make one attain “Moksha.” As Vishwalinga (the one which Lord Hanuman had brought from Mount Kailash) reached late, in the meantime, Lord Rama and Devi Sita had built a Linga out of sand to absolve their sin of killing Ravana. This temple has 1212 pillars that are 30 feet in height from the centre of the roof to the floor. The main tower of the Raja Gopura is 53 m tall, with individual carvings on every pillar.
The main attraction in the Ramanathaswamy temple is the 22 Holy Tirthas or holy water bodies. It is an essential ritual to bathe in these 22 sacred ponds before entering the sanctum sanctorum. 22 holy tanks/wells represent 22 arrows in the quiver of Rama.

The Moolavar or Presiding deity, the auspicious Shiva Linga, is kept inside the shrine of this temple. The temple houses individual shrines of Ramanthaswamy, Parvathavardini, Mahaganapathi, Visalakshi, Santanaganapathi, Sethumadhava, Nataraja, Subhramanya, Anjaneya, and Mahalaxmi gods and goddesses. Three of the most respected and well-known Shaivaite Saints - Appar, Sundarar, and Thirugnana Sambandhar have sung songs about the greatness of this temple. The longest corridor among the Hindu Temples is in the Ramanathswamy Temple.
