The Story

Lalita Ghat - The Nepali Temple

A piece of Kathmandu, carved in wood beside the Ganges.

Built by the King of Nepal in the 19th century, the Samrajeshwar Pashupateshwar temple at Lalita Ghat is a rare survival of terracotta and intricately carved wood in the Kathmandu style, dedicated to a form of Shiva.
Dark carved timber, rare and far from its mountain home.
Dedicated to the goddess Lalita and to Laliteshwar, the ghat is a serene northern stop, its dark timber shrine a striking counterpoint to the stone palaces along the rest of the river.
