The Story

Darbhanga Ghat - Palace on the Ganges

Few façades on the Ganges are as quietly grand as Darbhanga.

Commissioned by Bengal and Bihar nobility in the early 1900s, the palace at Darbhanga Ghat has been lovingly restored into one of India's most atmospheric heritage hotels, complete with a century-old hand-operated lift.
At golden hour the stone seems lit from within.
Its tiered arches and stone terraces make it the single most photographed frame of the Varanasi riverfront - especially when struck by the warm, low light of early morning.
