Tripura, a state where white marble palaces, floating lakes, ancient temples and sculpted hill-faces sit within easy reach. It is home to the most breathtaking landscapes, and this itinerary is designed as a short escape from modern mundanity.
The trip begins in Agartala, the breathtaking capital city, and experience the living royal heritage at Ujjayanta Palace, glide across Rudrasagar Lake to the romantic Neermahal, the unique water palace. For a religious and cultural twist to your tour, visit the devotional heart of Tripura at Tripurasundari Shaktipeeth (Matabari Temple). Along the way, you’ll see archaeological traces of medieval Buddhism and Hinduism at Pilak. With this, you can also enjoy a wildlife or botanical stop at Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary near Agartala for primates, birdlife and the sanctuary’s lakes.
The itinerary balances easy sightseeing with short walks and boat rides, no strenuous trekking, but plenty of photogenic moments, local food stops and handloom shopping options. Tripura’s relaxed pace and warm hospitality make it ideal for travellers who want culture and nature without long road fatigue; distances are short but scenically rewarding. This package is perfect for heritage lovers, photographers and first-time northeast visitors who want to experience palaces, phumdis (floating vegetation), sacred hill-top shrines and ancient stone art within a compact weekend.
In this package, you will get to experience the royal architecture & museum in the Ujjayanta Palace. With this, you can also enjoy a sunrise/sunset boat ride and a palace visit at Rudrasagar Lake and Neermahal. Visit Tripura Sundari, a 16th-century Shakti shrine and Kalyan Sagar.
Arrive at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport (Agartala). You will be welcomed warmly by the tour guide provided by Cholan Tours and then transfer to your hotel. After freshening up, visit Ujjayanta Palace and stroll through its Mughal-style gardens. Explore the state museum galleries where you get to witness the artefacts, textiles, and royal accessories. End the evening with the palace façade at sunset.
If time allows, browse Agartala’s local markets for handlooms and snacks and have dinner at a recommended local restaurant serving Tripuri specialities.
Overnight in Agartala.
Leave early for Melaghar (approx. 1–1.5 hour drive), a town situated about 50 km from the capital Agartala. Board a motorboat for Rudrasagar Lake and cruise to Neermahal, also called Twijilikma Nuyung — the palace rising from the water — and learn its royal history, a truly magnificent monument. Explore the small islands and lakeside villages.
You can also visit nearby village viewpoints, like the nearby hills and art galleries. Enjoy a picnic or a local authentic Tripura Thali for lunch, then return toward Agartala. If you prefer a quieter night, stay in a lakeside homestay/cottage (seasonal); otherwise, return to Agartala for a night's stay.
Check out of your hotel and drive to visit Tripura Sundari Temple, the sacred Shakti shrine and the Kalyan Sagar pond. Soak in temple rituals and the hillock views.
Optional — If schedule permits, detour to the Pilak archaeological site to see ancient stone sculptures and relics or visit Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary near Agartala for a short nature/wildlife stop before transfer to the airport/railway station for your onward journey. Bid adieu to the state of hills, happiness and a feeling of home away from home, to the state of Tripura.
