Salem is the fifth-largest city in Tamil Nadu and is situated 159 km northeast of Coimbatore. This locale thrives as a bustling commercial hub, renowned both for its textile and steel industries. Among its prized offerings are the Salem Mangoes, famed for their unparalleled sweetness, which consistently drive demand.

Enveloped by captivating mountains, the city also draws visitors to its nearby scenic spots.

Climate of Salem

The region is characterised by its arid climate, with limited rainfall. Temperatures are moderate, ranging from 25 to 37 degrees Celsius.

Best Time to Visit Salem 

The best time to visit Salem is between September and November, when the weather is balanced, and the festival is in full swing. The October season is festive, with autumn foliage. There is the largest crowd and the highest prices. 

Late springtime, spanning from April to May, is also a lovely time to visit for milder weather. It is best for heritage walks and sightseeing the historical places. 

December is excellent for fewer crowds, making accommodation easier and more budget-friendly. 

Places to Visit in Salem

Located in Tamil Nadu, Salem has many scenic places, including heritage sites, temples, and natural views. 

  • Yercaud Hills: You can marvel at the extraordinary vistas, comprising vibrant orange groves and lush coffee plantations. Named after a proximate lake, Yercaud promises an unforgettable retreat into nature's embrace.
  • Kiliyur Falls: Located merely 2.5 km from Yercaud, pristine waters cascade down 1600 feet. The journey to these falls is slightly treacherous; caution is advised.
  • Mettur Dam: It is one of India’s largest dams, built in 1934. It plays a crucial role in water supply to Salem and neighbouring cities and remains a point of dispute between Karnataka & Tamil Nadu due to its location on their border.
  • Servarayan Hillsbeckon: To those passionate about trekking and mountain climbing, with its rich biodiversity and indigenous tribal communities living in the dense forests.
  • Sugavaneswarar Swamy Temple: Arulmigu Sugavaneshwar Swamy Temple is a major Shaivite temple in Salem dedicated to Sugavaneswarar(Lord of Parrots). The temple reflects the architectural influences of the Chera, Chola and Pandya Dynasties. 
  • Linga Bhairavi Temple: It is a major industrial and transit hub at the base of the Shevaroy Hills. It’s well known for its historic forts and is a diverse religious site. 
  • Jerugumalai Viewpoint: A rising tourist spot for nature lovers, which is best visited at sunrise, around 6 am, to have views of stunning clouds and mist. 
  • Sangagiri Fort: It’s a historical fort built in the 15th century, which is 38 km from Salem.

  • Bus : The city accommodates two primary bus stations - MGR Integrated Bus Station & Town Bus Station, the latter located in the city's core. From these stations, buses connect to major cities efficiently.
  • Rail : The railway junction in Suramangalam isabout 5 km from Salem Town, linking it with Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Bangalore, & other parts of India.
  • Airport : Kamalapuram in Omalur houses the nearest airport, approximately 20 km from the town centre. While not overly bustling, it frequently operates domestic flights.
