Overview

This is an unhurried 12-day tour of Oman that blends the thrills of watersports with those of the desert. Apart from that, tourists are also introduced to some of Oman's historic and modern architecture in Muscat.

Then you are taken away by the awe-inspiring heritage town of Nizwa. The places you get to explore include the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Mutrah Corniche, Mutrah Souq, Al Jalali, and Al Mirani forts. 

The tour combines whale watching, turtle encounters, snorkeling, desert adventures, island exploration, and coastal wilderness, while still maintaining comfortable accommodations and well-paced travel.

It is designed for adventure seekers, nature lovers, photography enthusiasts, and leisure travelers. Therefore, the itinerary goes beyond the classic, allowing tourists to explore the country's dramatic landscape, rich wildlife, and ecosystems.

Itinerary

Wander around the Capital city, discovering the mosque and markets, then go for water sports in the emerald waters of Daymaniyat Island, and proceed to Nizwa, Sur, and Wahiba Sands.

Day 1: Arrival in Muscat Cityāˆ’

Arrival and meet-and-greet with our experienced travel guide. Then, a private transfer to the hotel with a prearranged fleet from Cholan Tours.

The guide helps with hassle-free check-in at the hotel. Then the remaining day is for you to relax and recover from travel fatigue.

Day 2: Muscat Exploration+

After a delicious breakfast, we set out to explore Oman's capital. First visit to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque: admire its Islamic architecture, spirituality, and beautiful decor.

Next, visit the Al Alam Palace that overlooks the Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts. Then, by the evening, take a walk by the Mutrah Corniche and enjoy the shopping in the traditional Mutrah Souq.

Day 3: Muscat - Sur+

After breakfast, take a drive south along the coast. En route, stop at the picturesque Bimmah Sinkhole for a swim in its turquoise water, and explore the lush greenery of Wadi Shab (a hike and swim to a hidden cave/waterfall). Continue to the coastal town of Sur.

Day 4: Sur and Turtle Watching+

After breakfast, explore Sur's maritime history by visiting the dhow (traditional boat) factory and the scenic Al Ayjah Watchtower.

In the evening, visit the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve to witness green turtles nesting (seasonal).

Day 5: Wahiba Sands (Sharqiya Sands)+

Head inland to the vast desert of Sharqiya Sands (also known as Wahiba Sands). A 4WD vehicle is highly recommended for driving in the dunes; alternatively, you can arrange a transfer from the nearest town, Al Wasil. Enjoy dune bashing, camel riding, and a sunset view from the top of the dunes.

You can do desert camping in the open to enjoy the starry nights for a unique experience of stargazing, and end the day with a tasty dinner.

Day 6: Nizwa, the Old Capital+

After breakfast, you will leave the desert and drive to the ancient city of Nizwa, where you will explore the traditional souq and the impressive 17th-century Nizwa Fort. On the way, consider a stop at the ancient village of Birkat Al Mouz.

Day 7: Forts and Ancient Villages+

Take day trips from Nizwa to explore more historical sites, including the impressive Bahla Fort (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the well-preserved Jibreen Castle. You can also visit the ancient mud-brick village of Al Hamra.

Day 8: Leisure Day+

After having your breakfast, you are free for the day to explore the city at your own pace. You can do

Day 9: Jebel Shams (Oman's Grand Canyon)+

The day begins with a drooling breakfast and then drives up to Jebel Shams, Oman's highest mountain, offering spectacular views of Wadi Ghul, known as the "Grand Canyon of Arabia". Hike the famous Balcony Walk or simply enjoy the cooler mountain climate and breathtaking natural scenery.

Day 10: Jebel Akhdar (The Green Mountain)+

After breakfast, head to the Jebel Akhdar region, known for its beautiful terraced farms and rose-filled villages (seasonal). The drive offers stunning panoramic views of the surroundings. You can explore the local area on designated hiking trails.

Day 11: Return Journey (via Wadi Bani)+

Once you are done with your breakfast and your stuff, drive back towards Muscat. Enjoy the scenic view of the adventurous Wadi Bani Awf mountain pass (requires 4WD). This route takes you through small villages and diverse landscapes, including Snake Canyon, a narrow canyon for adventure activities.

Day 12: Departure+

On the departure day of the trip, enjoy a farewell Omani breakfast before heading to Muscat International Airport for your onward journey.
