About Coakers Walk

Coakers Walk is one of the most iconic attractions in Kodaikanal, a breathtaking one kilometre man made promenade gracefully laid along the edge of the Kodai Hills. Built in 1872 by Lieutenant Coaker, this historic mountain pathway was designed to offer uninterrupted panoramic views of the valleys below, and over a century later, it remains the finest viewpoint in the Western Ghats.

Coakers Walk is only 0.5 km from Kodaikanal Lake and offers the charm of a hill station, plenty of colonial influence, and some very dramatic scenery. Make sure you visit this location when visiting Kodaikanal if you are looking for serenity, beautiful photography, a great spot for sunrise, or walks in the great outdoors. The walk starts at the Van Allen Hospital and passes through the edges of St Peter's Church, with safety rails on both sides, allowing for a safe and comfortable walk along this beautiful ridge. When walking along the ridge, you will see the beautiful Pamber River Valley to the SE of the walk, with the valley filled with tea plantations, farmlands, and small villages.

On clear days, you can also see Dolphin's Nose, Periyakulam Town, and the plains of Madurai to the very far SE of your view. If you are very fortunate, you might actually see the rare and beautiful Brocken Spectre, where the shadow of your body on clouds is surrounded by a “rainbow” like halo.

The charm of Coakers Walk lies in its ever-changing mood. Early mornings are ethereal, with mist rolling in and wrapping the hills in a dreamlike embrace.  It is best to visit before 2:30 pm, as mist often settles later in the day. The walkway itself is about six feet wide, gently sloped, and suitable for visitors of all ages.

Bicycles are available for rent at affordable hourly rates, and lockers are provided for convenience. The entry fees remain nominal and affordable. This makes Coaker's Walk one of the most budget-friendly attractions in Kodaikanal.

Whether you’re visiting during summer (March to June), winter (October to February), or monsoon for its lush greenery, Coakers Walk promises an unforgettable blend of mountain air, misty valleys, and timeless beauty.
