One of the main landmarks of Delhi, the Red Fort, is an important symbol of India's past and independence. It was built in 1648 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a large red sandstone fort and served as the residence of the Mughal Emperors for nearly 200 years.
The Red Fort has a unique blend of architectural styles, including Persian and Timurid, as well as Indian, as seen in structures such as the Diwan-i-Aam and the Diwan-i-Khas. The Red Fort is of great significance to all Indians because on every Indian Independence Day, the Prime Minister raises the Indian flag from the Red Fort. The grandeur of the fort, its importance to history, and its architectural excellence all contribute to making it unique in its own right.
