About Belur

Belur, located in the Hassan District of Karnataka, is celebrated for its architectural marvels. Approximately 220 kilometres from the state capital, Bangalore, Belur is a significant tourist hub, attracting hundreds of visitors daily. Just 16 away is another notable site, Halebidu.

The pinnacle of Hoysala architecture is evident in Belur. The city's crowning glory, the Chennakesava Temple, was constructed in 1117 CE. The Hoysala kings, dedicated to creating a masterpiece, invested 103 years to complete this architectural gem. The temple stands 37 meters high on a five-foot platform. The Vijayanagara Kings later added the main gateway tower, Rayagopura or Rajagopuram, to commemorate their victory over the Cholas in Thalakad.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Chennakesava, which translates to "Beautiful Vishnu." It took 103 years to complete. The commitment of the Hoysala Kings is reflected in the ornate paintings and exquisite sculptures. According to legend, Hoysala Queen Shanthala Devi performed dances in front of the temple during its construction, a story immortalised in the beautiful dancing figurines adorning the facade. Visitors today can be seen enjoying these platforms, capturing memorable moments.

The detailed carvings on the temple walls, featuring lions, horses, elephants, a lady with a mirror, and dancing figures, enhance the charm of your visit. Nearby, the Hoysaleswara Temple at Halebidu and the Jain monuments in Shravanabelagola have been nominated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Experience the magnificent architecture of Belur and receive blessings from Lord Chennakesava.
