Overview

Tamil Nadu's Tiger Trail is a rare and expertly designed 7-day expedition that takes you through all five officially declared tiger reserves of Tamil Nadu, a feat achieved by very few travellers.

Strung along the spectacular Western Ghats, these reserves collectively form one of the most biodiverse wildlife corridors in Asia, sheltering Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, leopards, gaur, sloth bears, and an astonishing richness of endemic birdlife.

The journey begins in Chennai before flying south to the Nilgiri foothills, where Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, part of the legendary Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sets the stage with its mixed deciduous forests and large elephant herds.

A short drive east brings you into Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, one of India's newest and most promising reserves, with a rapidly recovering tiger population and dramatic terrain spanning the Eastern and Western Ghats.

The circuit continues to Anamalai Tiger Reserve, also known as the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, nestled in the high-rainfall forests of the Anamalai Hills, celebrated for its hornbills, lion-tailed macaques, and one of South India's highest big cat densities.

From there, the tour sweeps south to the remote and rarely visited Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Tiger Reserve, a contiguous stretch of evergreen and semi-evergreen forests in the Southern Western Ghats, home to grizzled giant squirrels and a stunning diversity of flora.

The grand finale is Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, the southernmost tiger reserve in India and one of the country's most ecologically significant protected areas, sheltering an extraordinary range of endemic species found nowhere else on Earth.

A drive to Coimbatore concludes the circuit, completing a journey that spans the full length of Tamil Nadu's tiger landscape.

Throughout, English-speaking naturalists, curated jeep safaris, and carefully selected forest lodges ensure a seamless, deeply rewarding experience for both first-time wildlife travellers and seasoned naturalists.

Itinerary

Flying into Chennai and onwards to the Nilgiris, the tour traverses the Western Ghats from north to south, covering Mudumalai and Sathyamangalam in the northern hills, Anamalai in the central ranges, Srivilliputhur-Megamalai in the southern highlands, and concluding at Kalakad Mundanthurai, India's southernmost tiger reserve, before departing from Coimbatore.

Day 1: Arrive Chennai - Fly to Coimbatore - Mudumalai

Arrive at Chennai Airport, where our representative will meet and assist you. Transfer to the domestic terminal to board your onwards flight to Coimbatore.

On arrival at Coimbatore, our representative will provide transfers and drive you to Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (approx. 90 km, 2.5 hrs) through the scenic Nilgiri foothills and tea estates.

Day 2: Mudumalai Tiger Reserve+

Rise before dawn and assemble for morning tea/coffee before your expert-guided jeep safari into Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India's most ecologically significant protected landscapes.

Mudumalai is famed for its large elephant herds, gaur, spotted deer, and tiger. The mixed deciduous and dry thorn forests give way to lush riparian belts along the Moyar River, creating exceptional wildlife viewing.

Post lunch, an afternoon safari explores the reserve's eastern ranges. Evening at leisure. Overnight at lodge, Mudumalai.

Day 3: Mudumalai - Sathyamangalam+

After an early morning nature walk in the buffer forests surrounding the lodge with your naturalist, enjoy breakfast and check out. Drive to Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (approx. 60 km, 1.5 hrs), one of India's newest and fastest-recovering tiger reserves, straddling the confluence of the Eastern and Western Ghats.

Check in to your forest lodge, and post-lunch, proceed for an afternoon jeep safari in Sathyamangalam with a local expert. The reserve's rugged terrain and dense thorn and dry deciduous forests support healthy populations of tigers, leopards, sloth bears, elephants, and the rare Indian pangolin. Evening at leisure. Overnight at the lodge, Sathyamangalam.

Day 4: Sathyamangalam - Anamalai+

Morning jeep safari in Sathyamangalam, another opportunity to explore this underrated gem of Tamil Nadu's wildlife landscape. Post safari and breakfast, check out and drive to the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (approx. 120 km, 3 hrs), also known as the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, nestled in the high-rainfall Anamalai Hills.

Check in on arrival. Post lunch, proceed for an afternoon safari in Anamalai's spectacular evergreen and semi-evergreen forests. Overnight at the lodge, Anamalai.

Day 5: Anamalai - Srivilliputhur-Megamalai+

Post breakfast, check out and drive south to Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Tiger Reserve (approx. 160 km, 4 hrs), one of the least-visited and most pristine tiger reserves in India.

Check in to your forest lodge. Srivilliputhur-Megamalai spans a contiguous stretch of tropical evergreen and moist deciduous forests in the Southern Western Ghats, sheltering the endangered grizzled giant squirrel, tigers, leopards, elephants, and a spectacular array of endemic birds. Evening naturalist-led walk around the lodge and buffer area. Overnight at the lodge, Srivilliputhur-Megamalai.

FAQs on Tamil Nadu's Tiger Trail Tour

What makes this tour unique?

This is one of the very few itineraries that cover all five officially declared tiger reserves of Tamil Nadu in a single journey. Together, these reserves form a near-continuous wildlife corridor along the Western Ghats, one of the world's eight biodiversity hotspots. For wildlife enthusiasts, naturalists, and photographers, completing this circuit is a genuinely rare accomplishment.

What is the best time to undertake this tour?

The ideal window is October to March, when the weather across the Western Ghats is cooler, drier, and more comfortable for safaris. Wildlife sightings are excellent from December to March as animals congregate around water sources. Some reserve zones may have restricted access during the northeast monsoon (October-November); we advise booking well in advance so permits and access can be confirmed.

What wildlife can I expect to see?

Across the five reserves, you have the opportunity to encounter Bengal tigers, Indian leopards, Asian elephants, gaur, sloth bears, spotted and sambar deer, wild boar, lion-tailed macaques, Nilgiri langurs, grizzled giant squirrels, and an extraordinary diversity of birds, including the Malabar hornbill, Indian grey hornbill, and multiple endemic Western Ghats species. Tiger sightings, while possible, are never guaranteed; the joy of these forests lies equally in their overall biodiversity.

Are the safaris guided in English?

Yes. All safaris are conducted with trained, English-speaking naturalist guides who are deeply familiar with their respective reserves. They provide a detailed interpretation of animal behaviour, forest ecology, and conservation context throughout each safari, making the experience equally rewarding for first-time visitors and experienced wildlife travellers.

How physically demanding is this tour?

This tour is suitable for most fitness levels. Safaris are conducted from jeeps, and most nature walks are gentle buffer-zone strolls rather than strenuous treks. Some driving days are long (up to 4-5 hours); we recommend comfortable clothing and staying hydrated. Please inform us of any health or mobility concerns at the time of booking.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Absolutely. The sequence of reserves can be adjusted, additional nights can be added at any reserve, and accommodation can be upgraded or tailored to your preferences. The tour can also be extended with a cultural stop in Madurai, a coastal day in Rameswaram, or a tea estate experience in the Nilgiris or Anamalai Hills. We offer private departures for individuals, couples, and groups throughout the season.

Are safari permits required, and are they included?

Each national park requires safari permits issued by the respective Forest Department. Availability is limited and subject to daily quotas. We handle all permit bookings in advance on your behalf; permit fees may be included or billed separately, depending on your package. We strongly recommend booking this tour well ahead of your travel dates, especially for the peak season (December-February), to secure permits across all five parks.
