The Needle Rock Trek is a challenging short trail in the Gudalur region of the Nilgiris. The route passes through forested hill terrain, rocky sections and steep climbing patches before reaching the Needle Rock / Oosi Malai viewpoint. Though the total distance is only around 4 km, the gradient and rugged approach make it a tough trail.
The trek is best suited for adventure seekers, hikers and nature lovers who want a short but intense hill trek. From the top, trekkers can enjoy open views of the Nilgiri hills, Gudalur valley, Mudumalai side landscapes and surrounding forest stretches. Trekkers should follow the guide’s instructions closely, stay away from cliff edges and avoid unsafe selfie spots.
Reporting at Needle Rock Trail Entry Point
Arrive at the Needle Rock trail reception / entry point near Gudalur by 8:00 AM. Complete permit verification, registration and guide briefing.
Start of Trek
Begin the guided trek from the entry point. The trail starts with a forested approach and gradually moves towards rocky hill terrain.
Steep Forest and Hill Climb
Continue along the marked route with the trek guide. The trail may include uneven ground, exposed rocky patches and steep climbing sections.
Needle Rock / Oosi Malai Viewpoint
Reach the Needle Rock viewpoint and spend time enjoying the 360-degree views of Gudalur, valleys, hills and surrounding forest landscapes.
Trail Completion
Complete the one-way trail as instructed by the guide. Follow the official exit / return plan arranged for the group.
Trek Ends
Conclude the trek after around 2 hours. Refreshments may be provided as per package inclusion.
This trek is suitable for trekkers with good physical fitness and prior walking or hiking experience. Since Needle Rock is marked as a tough trail, participants should be able to handle steep terrain, rocky sections and continuous hill walking.
Not recommended for people with heart issues, breathing difficulties, severe knee pain, ankle injuries, vertigo, mobility limitations or major back problems. Children should join only with adult supervision and required consent.
Trekkers should carry a valid ID proof, water bottle, trekking shoes, personal medication, rain protection and weather-appropriate clothing. Avoid bright clothing, strong perfume, loud music, littering, feeding wildlife, shortcuts and risky cliff-edge photos. Trek Tamil Nadu’s safety guidance also asks trekkers to stay with the group, follow guide instructions, respect wildlife and leave no trash.
Reach Gudalur first, then travel towards Needle Rock View Point on the Gudalur–Ooty Main Road. The viewpoint area is around 9 km from Gudalur and around 40 km from Ooty. Private vehicles, taxis or local buses on the Ooty–Gudalur route can be used, but final reporting should be as per the trek operator’s reception point.
The nearby rail option is Ooty Railway Station, around 40–50 km from the trail region. Mettupalayam Railway Station can also be used as a major railhead for travellers coming from Coimbatore or other cities. From the railway station, continue by taxi or road transport towards Gudalur and Needle Rock.
The nearest major airport commonly used for this region is Coimbatore International Airport, around 127 km from Needle Rock View Point. From Coimbatore, travellers can hire a cab and reach the trail region via NH181 / Ooty–Gudalur route.
