The Karikaiyur to Rangasamy Peak Trek is a moderate grade trail in the Nilgiris, starting from Karikaiyur Trekking Shed and moving towards the Rangasamy Peak viewpoint. The trail begins with a forest climb and gradually passes through moist deciduous forest, shola patches and open grassland sections. Trekkers can experience changing terrain, hill slopes, natural forest sounds and scenic viewpoints throughout the route.
The trek is known for its wilderness feel, steep sections and rewarding summit experience. The area is part of a rich wildlife habitat where elephants, wild boar, hare, birds and other forest species may be present, so trekkers must stay with the guide and follow forest department instructions at all times.
Reporting at Karikaiyur Trekking Shed
Arrive at the Karikaiyur Trekking Shed / reception point by 8:00 AM. Complete entry formalities, permit verification and guide briefing.
Start of Trek
Begin the trek from Karikaiyur with the forest guide. The first section passes through forest terrain with gradual to steep ascent.
Forest and Shola Trail Walk
Continue through moist deciduous forest, shola patches and grassland sections. Trekkers may notice birdlife, forest signs and scenic Nilgiri landscapes along the route.
Rangasamy Peak Viewpoint
Reach the Rangasamy Peak viewpoint and spend time enjoying panoramic views of the Nilgiri hills, valleys and surrounding forested landscape.
Return Trek
Begin the descent through the same route under guide supervision. Maintain group discipline and avoid shortcuts.
Trek Completion
Return to Karikaiyur Trekking Shed by around 12:00 PM. Collect refreshments if arranged and conclude the trek.
This trek is suitable for physically fit beginners and regular walkers who can complete an 8 km hill trail with steep and uneven forest sections. Trekkers should be comfortable walking continuously for 4 hours and following instructions from the trek guide.
Children should join only with adult supervision. The trek is not recommended for pregnant women, senior citizens with mobility issues, or people with serious heart, breathing, knee, ankle or back problems.
Trekkers must carry a valid ID proof, personal medication, water bottle, comfortable trekking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Bright clothing, strong perfumes, loud noise, littering, feeding wildlife and leaving the group should be strictly avoided.

Reach Kotagiri first, then continue towards Karikaiyur Trekking Shed, which is the reception point for the trek. Kotagiri is listed as the nearby bus stand, around 22 km from the trail reception point. Private vehicles or local taxis are recommended because public transport availability near the trekking shed may be limited. Parking is available at the reception point.
The nearest major railhead is Mettupalayam Railway Station, approximately 45 km from the trail region. From Mettupalayam, travellers can hire a taxi or travel via Kotagiri towards Karikaiyur Trekking Shed.
The nearest airport is Coimbatore International Airport, approximately 90 km away. From Coimbatore, travel by road via Mettupalayam and Kotagiri towards Karikaiyur.
