The Karikayur to Porivarai Rock Painting Trail is one of the most fascinating heritage treks in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu. This moderate trek takes visitors through scenic forest landscapes to Porivarai, home to the largest prehistoric rock art site in South India. The site features nearly 500 ancient rock paintings believed to date back thousands of years, depicting animals, hunters, battles, geometric patterns, and daily life of early human settlements. The trek offers a unique blend of archaeology, history, culture, and nature, making it an unforgettable experience for trekkers, photographers, and history enthusiasts alike.
The trek begins from Karikayur village, located near Kotagiri in the Nilgiris. The trail passes through dry deciduous and mixed forest terrain with gentle ascents and descents before reaching the impressive Porivarai rock shelter. Porivarai is renowned for its prehistoric paintings that provide valuable insights into the lives and beliefs of ancient communities that once inhabited the region.
The paintings include depictions of animals, hunters, warriors, spirals, and symbolic motifs that reflect the social and cultural practices of prehistoric societies. The massive rock shelter stretches across a large rock face and is considered one of the most significant archaeological treasures in South India.
Apart from its historical importance, the trek also offers stunning views of the Bhavanisagar region and surrounding Nilgiri landscapes. Wildlife sightings may include Indian Gaur, Wild Boar, Elephants, various bird species, and other forest inhabitants.
