Pandu Ghat

Laced at the southern edge of the majestic river, this revered ghat plays host not merely to a mode of passage but also to a hub of epic mythology, past traders’ transactions, and the thriving, vibrant Assamese culture and ethnicity.

Ancient wisdom passes along that the Ghat was named after Prince Pandu - father of the Pandavas—during his exile. For ages on, tourists frequent these steps seeking solace in the presence of their past selves and ancestors.

But the significance doesn't end at Mythology-Pandu Ghat boasts of an ancient maritime heritage. A principal riverport in the British era, it bridged the gap between Guwahati and the colonial hub of Calcutta, carrying the rich tea-cultivated hills of Assam across the river highway via steel steamships.

The essence remains preserved even today, even as concrete bridges crisscross the view from the distant banks, offering a unique world where history gently licks by. 

Wake to the symphony of silence at dawn here as fishermen deftly cast out their hand-woven nets; the river dolphins occasionally leap high above the surface, and the towering Kamakhya Temple guards over the distant hills from where it observes the sacred riverlands below. 

Historically, the site is tied to the battlefields of the ancient Ahom kingdom and served as an essential river defense line. Pandu Ghat remains one of the main centres in Guwahati where ancestral Pinda Daan offerings occur during holy assemblies.
