Overview

Searching for the perfect Shimla family tour package that strikes the ideal balance between sightseeing, spirituality, and relaxation? Cholan Tours presents a thoughtfully designed 5-day Shimla tour package for families, covering every iconic landmark, temple, heritage site, and natural attraction that makes Shimla the most beloved hill station in North India, all at a comfortable, family-friendly pace.

Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and formerly the summer capital of British India. It is a city that wears its history with remarkable elegance. From the soaring Gothic spires of Christ Church to the stately grandeur of the Viceregal Lodge (Rashtrapati Niwas), from the hilltop shrines of Jakhoo and Tara Devi to the vibrant social life of The Ridge and Mall Road, Shimla tour packages have long been among the most popular in India, and for very good reason.

Your Cholan Tours Shimla holiday begins dramatically, aboard the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kalka-Shimla Toy Train, one of the most scenic and historically significant narrow-gauge railways in the world. Winding through 103 tunnels and across 864 bridges through the pine-forested Shivalik hills, this is a journey that families cherish for decades. All four nights of this Shimla family package are spent in Shimla itself, ensuring maximum comfort, minimal travel fatigue, and the freedom to explore this magnificent city thoroughly.

Whether you are searching for Shimla tour packages from Delhi, Shimla family holiday packages, or Shimla heritage tour packages, we provide everything. Temples, railways, colonial mansions, Himalayan birdlife, and the irresistible warmth of Shimla's bazaars await your family.

Itinerary

This 5-day Shimla family tour rides the Kalka-Shimla Toy Train into the hills, explores Jakhoo and Tara Devi temples, walks through the colonial grandeur of The Ridge, Christ Church, and the Viceregal Lodge. All based comfortably in Shimla throughout.

Day 1: Arrival in Shimla via Kalka-Shimla Heritage Toy Train

Your Cholan Tours Shimla family adventure begins in the most spectacular fashion possible. Aboard the legendary Kalka-Shimla Narrow Gauge Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most celebrated rail journeys in all of Asia.

Departing from Kalka, the toy train winds its way up the forested Shivalik hills through 103 tunnels, across 864 bridges and culverts, and past breathtaking valleys, pine forests, and quaint mountain villages over a distance of approximately 96 kilometres. The journey takes around 5 to 6 hours. This is not merely a transfer; it is the first great memory of your Shimla holiday.

Upon arrival at the historic Shimla Railway Station, itself a charming colonial-era structure worth admiring, proceed to your hotel, check in, and settle in comfortably.

The rest of the evening is at leisure, allowing the family to freshen up and take a gentle first stroll along the famous Mall Road or simply enjoy the cool Shimla air from your hotel.

Overnight Stay in Shimla

Day 2: Jakhoo Temple, Himalayan Bird Park & The Ridge+

Begin the morning with a visit to Jakhoo Temple. It is one of the most iconic and beloved religious sites in Shimla, which is perched atop Jakhoo Hill at an altitude of 2,455 metres.

This is the highest point in Shimla. Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Jakhoo Temple is steeped in mythology. It is believed that Lord Hanuman rested here during his search for the Sanjeevani herb to save Lakshmana.

The temple is guarded by a towering 33-metre statue of Lord Hanuman that is visible from across Shimla and serves as a spiritual beacon over the city.

After descending from Jakhoo, head to the Himalayan Bird Park. It is a delightful and family-friendly attraction located near the Ridge.

For children especially, the Himalayan Bird Park is a wonderful, educational, and entertaining experience. It provides a rare opportunity to see some of the most exotic and colourful avifauna of the Himalayas up close.

The afternoon is spent at The Ridge, the very heart and soul of Shimla. Adjacent to The Ridge stands the magnificent Christ Church, built in 1857. It is the second-oldest church in North India and one of the finest examples of neo-Gothic architecture in the country.

Overnight Stay in Shimla

Day 3: Viceregal Lodge, Himachal State Museum & Kali Bari Temple+

Begin the morning with a visit to the magnificent Viceregal Lodge, also known as Rashtrapati Niwas. It is arguably the most impressive colonial building in all of Shimla and one of the finest examples of Elizabethan architecture in India.

The Lodge is open for guided tours that take visitors through its grand halls, the library, the ballroom, and the surrounding beautifully landscaped gardens. The architecture, the history, and the panoramic views from the grounds are extraordinary.

Following the Viceregal Lodge, visit the Himachal State Museum. The museum's collection is home to Pahari miniature paintings, ancient coins, tribal jewellery, traditional costumes, bronze sculptures, and archaeological artefacts. The museum portrays the history of Himachal Pradesh and the rich culture of the Himalayan region.

Conclude the day's sightseeing with a visit to Kali Bari Temple. It is one of Shimla's most revered and centrally located Hindu temples. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Shyamala Devi (an incarnation of Goddess Kali).

Overnight Stay in Shimla

Day 4: Tara Devi Temple, Maa Vaishno Devi Temple and Shimla Railway Station+

Start your morning with a visit to Tara Devi Temple. It is located on a forested hill known as Tara Parvat, approximately 11 kilometres from Shimla. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Tara, who is a form of the divine mother revered in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

Next, visit Maa Vaishno Devi Temple, Shimla, a revered shrine dedicated to Goddess Vaishno Devi, modelled on the famous cave shrine of Vaishno Devi in Jammu & Kashmir.

Return to central Shimla for a visit to the iconic Shimla Railway Station, the upper terminus of the Kalka-Shimla Heritage Railway. The evening is free for a leisurely stroll and shopping on Mall Road.
