About Thalaiyar Waterfall

Thalaiyar Falls stands as a remarkable landmark in Tamil Nadu, the state's highest waterfall and the sixth-highest in India. Towering at 975 feet, the waterfall is distinctively visible from a distance, resembling a rat’s tail, earning it the nickname "Rat Tail Falls." It is beautifully situated along the Palani Hills on the route to Kodaikanal.

An interesting feature of this waterfall is its structured management of water flow. Atop the falls, small concrete barriers have been constructed on both sides to channel the water more narrowly.

Visitors have the opportunity to sit or walk along these concrete structures while taking in the breathtaking scenery that unfolds before them.

On clear, sunny days, one can catch a glimpse of Thalaiyar Falls from Dum Dum Rock. From this vantage point, it presents itself like a delicate white thread against a dramatic backdrop of dark rocks.

However, caution is advised concerning the water quality of Thalaiyar Falls. Originating from Perumal Malai village, located 9 km away, the water does not meet purity standards suitable for drinking.

How to Reach Thalaiyar Falls

• By Air: The nearest airport to Thalaiyar Falls is Madurai International Airport, located about 120 km away. From the airport, visitors can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Kodaikanal or Batlagundu, which are the nearest towns providing access to the waterfall.
• By Train: The closest railway station is Kodai Road Railway Station, approximately 80 km from Thalaiyar Falls. This station is well-connected to major cities such as Chennai, Madurai, and Trichy. From Kodai Road, travellers can hire a taxi or board a local bus to reach the base areas near the Palani Hills.
• By Road: Thalaiyar Falls is best accessed by road through the Kodaikanal–Dindigul route. The nearest town is Batlagundu (Batlagundu), located around 15–20 km from the viewing points of the waterfall. Regular buses and taxis operate between Madurai, Dindigul, Batlagundu, and Kodaikanal.

From Kodaikanal
Visitors staying in Kodaikanal can reach Thalaiyar Falls by driving towards Dum Dum Rock viewpoint, which is one of the best places to see the waterfall from a distance. The drive takes around 1–1.5 hours and offers scenic views of the Palani Hills.

Trekking Access
Adventure enthusiasts can also attempt a trek to the base of Thalaiyar Falls starting from Manjalar Dam or Perumalmalai village. This trek is challenging and requires good physical fitness, proper guidance, and local support due to steep terrain and dense forest paths.
