About Ramanatha Swamy Temple

The Ramanatha Swamy Temple is tucked away on Rameshwaram Island, right at the southern tip of Tamil Nadu. It’s known as a sacred spot by Hindus everywhere in India! It's also one of the twelve Jyothirlingha Shrines scattered around India. Essentially, a Jyothirlingam symbolises an eternal column of fire from which Lord Shiva emerged as Lingam to be worshipped.

Each Hindu is encouraged to visit this temple once in their lifetime as part of the sacred Char Dham pilgrimage established by Adi Sankara, alongside Badrinath, Puri, & Dwaraka. Legend has it that this is where Lord Rama performed special rituals for Lord Shiva. Also, get this: it’s home to the world's longest corridor!

Rama stopped here after his epic battle in Sri Lanka and victory over King Ravana. He asked Hanuman to fetch a Lingam from Mount Kailash. But since Hanuman was late, Mother Sita crafted a temporary one from sand. That same Lingam is still worshipped today inside the temple under the name Ramanatha Swamy. Plus, there’s a special rule: offer prayers first to the Lingam Hanuman, who was eventually brought back! Yep, that tradition remains strong even today.

This magnificent temple has been around for ages and carries stories from the Ramayana era itself. Initially roofed with thatch during the 11th and 12th centuries, it later received royal makeovers from various dynasties like the Pandyas and Tanjore Sarfoji Kings. Oh, and there’s a neat tidbit: stones for renovation were sent over by a royal family from Triconamalee in Sri Lanka!

You will also find separate shrines for deity Ramanatha Swamy and His consort Goddess Parvadhavardhini inside. The architecture? Simply breathtaking! Four massive towers guard each direction, with two serving as gateway towers. Stroll through those famous corridors resting on five-foot-high platforms, and you will be dazzled!

There are twenty-four holy water bodies within this temple, known as Theerthams, where taking a dip is thought to be quite purifying. Agni Theertham by the shore is especially popular among devotees dipping in year-round! A complete pilgrimage traditionally goes from here to Varanasi & then back here again.

• By Air: Catch a flight to Madurai Airport; it's about 180 km away.
• By Train: Hop off at Rameshwaram station, just 3km from the temple!
• By Road: Drive down from major Tamil Nadu cities like Trichy, Madurai or Coimbatore with frequent buses zooming back & forth.
