About Sri Vedapureeswarar Temple

Temple’s Peculiarity:

The revered Sri Vedapureeswarar Temple, recently renovated by Dewan Kandappa Mudaliyar, is dedicated to the prime deity Lord Shiva, who is worshipped in the form of a swayambu lingam. This remarkable temple dates back 234 years. 

The Sri Vedapureeswarar Temple features a massive 75-foot or seven-tiered gopuram or main entrance. The temple also features stunning pillars in the main shrine, with intricate carvings of Lord Shiva in various dance poses. 

The temple acts as the major cultural and spiritual centre in the city, and hosts various Shaivite festivals. It is also believed that worshipping here relieves the devotees from miseries and ill luck. 

Festivals:

As a renowned Shiva temple, several Saivite festivals are observed here. The most celebrated include Brahmotsavam, Navratri, Pradosham, Sankatahara Chaturthi, Aadi Pooram, Karthigai, and Shivaratri.

Special Offerings:

Devotees visit to dispel misfortune and adversity. Offerings include white cloth, and abhishekams performed with rose water, coconut, sandalwood, and sacred ash. On Pradosham days, ghee lamps are also lit.

Speciality of the Temple:

The self-manifested Swayambulingam Lingam is believed to liberate worshippers from misfortune. Devotees offer coconut, ghee, and white cloth. Uniquely, Lord Dakshinamoorthy faces the west, a rare orientation.

Open daily from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Dress Code:

While there is no specific dress code, attire covering upper arms and legs is recommended to honour temple traditions.

Uniqueness:

The temple’s Dakshinamoorthy faces south, an exceptionally rare orientation. Devotion here, especially to Lord Muruga, who is extolled by Saint Ramalinga, is believed to relieve all sufferings.
