Augarnath Temple

Also known as Kali Paltan Temple, Augarnath Temple is a highly revered Hindu shrine located in the cantonment area of Meerut. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it houses a self-manifested (Swayambhu) Shivalinga and holds a unique place in Indian history as a crucial spark point for the Indian Rebellion of 1857.The temple remains an important place of worship and a notable part of Meerut’s historical landscape. The present temple features a grand white marble facade with intricate glass work and striking spires (shikharas).

Timings: 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM daily

Note: Photography is strictly prohibited inside the core sanctum. Visitors are expected to wear modest dress matching the sanctity of the temple.

St. John’s Church

St. John's Church (also known as St. John the Baptist Church) in Meerut Cantonment is the oldest surviving British-built Garrison Church in North India. Constructed by the East India Company between 1819 and 1821, this parish church features a massive seating capacity of 3,000 people and stands as a major monument of early 19th-century colonial history.

Timings: 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Shahid Smarak

Shahid Smarak (also known as Shaheed Smarak) in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, is one of India's most significant historical war memorials, built to commemorate the martyrs and revolutionaries of the First War of Indian Independence in 1857. Strategically located in the Meerut Cantonment area on Delhi Road, it marks the exact geographic origin where the historic Sepoy Mutiny against British colonial rule took shape. An eternal flame burns continuously within the premises to pay tribute to the immortal courage of the freedom fighters.

Timings: 10:30 AM - 4:30 PM

It remains closed on Mondays, public holidays and second Sundays.

Shahpeer Sahib’s Dargah

Shahpeer Sahab ka Mazaar is a 17th-century Mughal mausoleum located at Shahpeer Gate in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, built to honor the revered Sufi saint Hazrat Shahpeer. It is constructed using stark red sandstone featuring intricate nakkashi (carved) floral designs and geometric motifs. It is recognized as a National Heritage Monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Gandhi Bagh

Gandhi Bagh, also widely known as Company Garden, is the oldest and largest public park in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Centrally located on Mall Road within the Meerut Cantonment area, it serves as a historic and serene green oasis that offers a welcome escape from the urban hustle. Because it is managed by the Indian Army’s Cantonment Board, the park maintains an exceptionally high standard of cleanliness, landscaping, and security. It is highly favoured by families, couples, and fitness enthusiasts alike. A signature highlight of the garden is its lively musical fountain show, which draws crowds every evening.

Timings: open daily from 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM

Suraj Kund

Suraj Kund Park is one of the oldest and most culturally significant public parks in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Located in the middle of the city at Gandhi Nagar, it serves as a central green space known for its mythological history, a historical water reservoir, and recreational activities. A massive 44-meter-high Indian National Flag on a central pole stands inside the park along with a prominent statue of Swami Vivekananda.

Hastinapur – A Heritage Excursion

Around 37 km from Meerut, Hastinapur makes an interesting excursion for travellers exploring the region. Associated with the Mahabharata tradition, the town is also an important Jain pilgrimage centre, with sites including Jambudweep Jain Temple, ancient Digambar Jain temples and Shri Kailash Parvat Jain Temple. Derived from the Sanskrit words Hasti (elephant) and Pura (city), translating to the "City of Elephants". Metaphorically, it is also referred to as the "City of Wisdom"

Best time to visit:

The best time to visit Meerut is from October to March, when the weather is generally more comfortable for sightseeing and exploring the city’s historical, cultural and religious attractions.

  • October–November: Pleasant weather, making it a good period for sightseeing and exploring places such as Augharnath Temple and historical sites.
  • December–February: Cooler winter weather and generally the most comfortable period for outdoor exploration.
  • March: Temperatures begin to rise, but early mornings and evenings can still be pleasant.
  • April–June: Summers can be very hot, so this is less comfortable for extensive sightseeing.
  • July–September: Monsoon brings some relief from the heat, but rainfall can occasionally affect outdoor plans.

How to reach:

Meerut is well connected by air, rail and road, making it easily accessible from Delhi and other major cities in North India.

By Air: The nearest major airport is Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), Delhi, located around 80–90 km from Meerut. From the airport, travellers can continue to Meerut by road or rail.

By Train: Meerut has good railway connectivity with major cities including Delhi, Haridwar, Dehradun and other parts of North India. The city’s main railway stations include Meerut City Junction and Meerut Cantt.

By Road: Meerut is well connected by road and can be reached conveniently from Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Haridwar and other nearby cities. The Delhi–Meerut Expressway has further improved road connectivity between Delhi and Meerut. Regular buses, taxis and private vehicles are available.

By Metro: Meerut is also connected to Delhi through the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, providing a convenient option for travellers arriving from the Delhi-NCR region.
