About Meenakshi Amman Temple

Right in the heart of Tamil Nadu's bustling city, Madurai, stands a striking temple that never fails to amaze. Known for its 14 tower gates (or Gopurams) and gorgeous architecture, the Meenakshi Amman Temple is a sight to behold. This place isn’t just about beauty; it draws around 15,000 visitors each day and pulls in about $60 million annually.

Now, the Meenakshi Amman Temple holds a special spot among Indian temples; it's one of the few where Goddess Meenakshi gets the first nods of reverence. Many believe her eyes resemble those of a fish, hence her name, Meenakshi ('Meen' in Tamil means fish). The main deities here are none other than Goddess Meenakshi & Lord Sundareswarar.

There’s a fascinating tale from as far back as the 14th century about this temple's origins during the Pandyas Dynasty era. Legend has it that King Malaiyatvaja Pandian and his queen were blessed with a girl who emerged from sacrificial flames during a ritual aimed at procuring an heir. Surprisingly, she was born with three breasts - but a heavenly voice assured her alarmed parents that the anomaly would correct itself once she met her destined prince.

And guess what? It did! The girl grew up to be quite accomplished, learning all 64 art forms before setting off on journeys that led her to defeating many celestial figures. However, upon meeting Lord Shiva, she couldn't bear to fight him; their destined encounter made her third breast disappear & they soon realised they were meant to be together.

Their marriage was nothing short of epic, described as grandest ever & is celebrated even today during April-May as Chithirai Thiruvizha. Madurai dresses up spectacularly for this event, drawing close to one million people!

Architecturally redefined by Nayak Kings, Madurai’s layout encircles this sanctum like petals around a flower’s heart. Streets still bear names of Tamil months like Avani-Moola Veedhi & Chithirai Veedhi. Within these walls are over 33,000 sculptures in multiple halls, testaments to the devotion & offerings presented by dynasties past.

Another cool spot is the Tank of Golden Lotus or ‘Potramarai Kulam’, where any new literature must pass a unique test: if genuine, it will float; if not, it sinks! Historical texts like Thirukkural faced this test here about 2 millennia ago.
