Virupaksha Temple:

Virupaksha Temple, a distinguished Hindu shrine and UNESCO World Heritage Site, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It stands as one of the oldest and most significant temples in India.

Historical Significance:

This temple has both religious and historical importance, drawing devotees and tourists from around the globe. Its history dates back to the seventh century, originally constructed by the Chalukya dynasty. Over the centuries, it underwent various expansions and renovations by different rulers, notably during the Vijayanagar Empire's rule from the 14th to the 16th centuries.

Unique Features:

What sets the Virupaksha Temple apart in Hampi is its architectural brilliance. The design integrates Dravidian and Vijayanagar architectural styles. A focal point within the temple is the statue of Lord Shiva, revered as "the squint-eyed", a potent and revered form of the deity.

The temple houses a 50-metre-tall gopuram, or the main entrance, which was built by the King Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara. The gopuram features intricate carvings, along with pillared halls. 

The temple is also part of the UNESCO-listed Hampi group of monuments, which symbolises the rich history and cultural heritage of the nation. 

Visiting Hours

• Darshan Timings: 9 AM to 1 PM, and 5 PM to 9 PM.
• Dress code:  It is recommended for men to wear shirts with dhotis or pants. Whereas for women, it is recommended to wear sarees, churidars, or pyjamas.

Festivals: 

Notable celebrations include Maha Shivaratri, Virupaksha Rathotsava, and the Marriage Festival of Pampa Devi.

• Virupaksha-Pampa Marriage Festival: Celebrated during December every year, the Virupaksha-Pampa Marriage Festival celebrates the divine union of the Lord Virupaksha and his consort, Goddess Pampa. The festival features vibrant traditional rituals, along with grand processions. 
• Annual Chariot Festival: Hosted during February, the deity of the temple is taken in a grand procession through the streets of the city.
• Hampi Utsav: A city-wide cultural festival, with the Virupaksha Temple as the centre. The festival showcases vibrant music, dances, and art forms. 
• Purandaradasa Aradhana: Dedicated to the famous saint-poet Purandaradasa, the festival features classical music performances.
