About Jog Waterfalls

The second highest plunge waterfall in India attracts nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. The location is on the borders of Uttara Kannada and Shimoga districts in Karnataka.

Jog Waterfalls is the highest waterfall in the state. The drop height is around 253 m (850 ft) and only lags behind Nohkolikai of Meghalaya. Sharavathi River is the creator of this sensational waterfall. The falls are also called Gerusoppe and Joga Waterfalls.

In the denser portions of Karnataka’s evergreen forests, Jog Waterfalls is a breathtaking sight to behold for long hours. It has four distinct and beautiful cascades - Raja (peaceful and dignified waterfall), Rani (snaky stretch resembling a dancer), Rocket (large volume of water through a small orifice), and Roarer (mass of rocks creates huge noise).

The flow of the Sharavathi River through the 250-yard rocky bed reaches a gorge and splits into four streams with different characteristics. Due to the tourism department’s effort, steps are built to register a beautiful view from the other end.

“Joga” in Kannada means falls. Liganmakki Dam built across the Sharavathi River is a tiny source of power to Karnataka.

The waterfalls get monstrous during the monsoon. This is the perfect time to imbibe the beauty of the impenetrable forest areas too.

Speciality

Jog Waterfalls is the angelized version of Jogada Gundi. It forms a region called Gerusoppe and so the moniker, Gerusoppe Waterfalls.

One of the biggest metal recoveries from the ocean had happened in Jog. The British Merchant Ship got sunk while cruising toward Ireland. But, the recovery of 48 tonnes of Silver was successful.

The four cascades have titles in connection with their style of flow.

Tourists can get an enthralling view of the waterfalls when they climb carefully down, close to 1600 steps.

There is a misty atmosphere near the waterfalls due to the strong vertical descent.

Hydroelectricity generation is a useful project in Jog Waterfalls.

Jog Waterfalls flows through Gerusoppa and Idagunji to reach the Arabian Sea at Honnavar, a secret treasure of the Western Ghats.

Nearest Tourist Attractions

Boat Rides, Kayaking (with instructions from guides), and River Rafting on the backwaters of Sharavathi River. It is a humble surrounding in Honnemaradu known as the “golden lake” (19.8 km away).

Sigandooru Village has Shri Chowdeshwari Temple. Goddess Chowdeshwari is the presiding deity. People visit this temple to protect their valuables and precious objects. There is a belief that the lost valuables will find their way to the owner. (67.6 km away).

Shettihaly Sanctuary near the Tunga Anaicut Dam is full of lions, tigers, deers, and bears. (99.6 km away)

People carry handy tents and a good amount of food when they go to Kanoor Fort. It is also known as Keladi Kote and was once under the control of the Keladi Dynasty. (38.3 km away)

Monsoon is the best time to go here! Winter is good for outdoor activities since summer is extremely hot here. From October to February, 15-30 degrees Celsius prevails in winter. Around 24-30 degrees Celsius temperature is present in the rainy months. The best time to feel the luscious green surroundings of the Jog Waterfalls.
