About Dharmapuri

Dharmapuri achieved its distinct status as an independent district on October 2, 1965, after previously being part of Salem. It was divided into the districts of Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri in 2004. Positioned in the north-western segment of Tamil Nadu, it is bordered by the Thiruvannamalai and Villupuram districts to the east. The revered Kaveri River
meanders along the outskirts of this town, enhancing its scenic beauty. Additionally, there are several attractions within and around the city.

Dharampuri, in Tamil Nadu, is often referred to as the City of ‘Temples and Churches’. It is bordered by Salem to the south, the River Kaveri to the west and Krishnagiri to the north. 

The area was historically ruled by the Pallavas, Rastrakutas, and Cholas, and therefore has architecture inspired by their reigns. These temples include Adhiyamankottam, named after Adhiyaman Neduman Anji. 

Climate of Dharampuri 

The climate in Dharmapuri is moderate. Summer temperatures peak at 38°C, while winter temperatures drop to 12°C. Generally, the weather remains pleasantly warm year-round.

Best Time To Visit Dharampuri 

October - March

Visits during the winter months are a more comfortable experience. It is because the weather during this time is delightful and not extreme. It ranges from 18 to 24 degrees Celsius. Therefore, the weather during that time contributes to the overall experience of the sightseeing and tour. 

July - October

This is the monsoon season during July to October and the area becomes more green due to the rain. However, there can be heavy rainfall at times which can affect travel plans. Therefore, plan your trip accordingly.

April - June 

The summer season is hot and dry spanning between April to June. The temperature in the region sticks around 31 to 38 degrees Celsius. April to May remains the hottest month. Due to the high temperature, this season and duration must be avoided for tour purposes.

Places to Visit

  • Hogenakkal Falls : Located 46km from Dharmapuri, these falls offer spectacular views as the Kaveri River cascades into Tamil Nadu. Ideal for relaxation, visitors can also enjoy rides on traditional coracles.
  • Theerthamalai Temple : Situated in Harur district, this temple venerates Lord Shiva and holds significant mythological significance; it is believed that Lord Rama created the nearby waterfall to worship Lord Shiva.
  • Kottai Kovil : Notable for its devotion to Lord Shiva, this temple attracts visitors with its unique sculptures, intricate paintings, and a notable ‘hanging pillar’.
  • Adiyamankottai : Just 7km from Dharmapuri lies this small town, featuring remnants of an ancient fort, with the Chenraya Perumal and Kalabhairava temples serving as key highlights.

Besides these noteworthy sites, numerous venerable Churches & Mosques proliferate in the area.

  • Air : The nearest international airport is located in Bangalore, while Salem hosts the closest domestic airport. Subsequent travel to Dharmapuri requires bus or taxi services.
  • Train : Dharmapuri district is well connected via the South Western Railway line, with frequent trains from major cities.
  • Bus : The region offers bus service via two main bus stations — one for local travel within Tamil Nadu and another for long-distance connections.
