Connaught Place
The Commercial and Cultural Heart of Delhi

About Connaught Place

Connaught Place, commonly known as CP, is one of New Delhi’s most recognisable commercial districts. Developed during the British period and named after the Duke of Connaught, it is distinguished by its circular layout, white colonnaded buildings and concentric roads. Today, the area brings together offices, retail outlets, restaurants, cafés, hotels and cultural spaces, making it a lively destination in the heart of the capital.

The district is arranged around an inner and outer circle, with radial roads connecting it to other parts of Delhi. From casual eateries to historic restaurants and contemporary cafés, Connaught Place also has a varied dining scene that attracts office-goers, shoppers and visitors throughout the day.

Beyond shopping and food, Connaught Place offers access to several important landmarks. Jantar Mantar, an eighteenth-century astronomical observatory, lies nearby, while the historic Agrasen Ki Baoli is within reach on foot from parts of the district. Central Park, situated in the middle of the inner circle, provides an open green space amid the surrounding commercial activity. The nearby Janpath market is known for clothing, accessories, handicrafts and souvenirs.

Connaught Place is also an important transport hub, served by Rajiv Chowk Metro Station, where the Blue and Yellow Lines intersect. Its central location makes it convenient to reach India Gate, Kartavya Path, the National Museum and other attractions in central Delhi. Combining colonial-era architecture with modern commerce and urban life, Connaught Place remains one of the capital’s most prominent places for shopping, dining and exploring the city.

Places to Visit in Connaught Place

  1. Central Park: Located at the heart of Connaught Place, Central Park is a landscaped public space surrounded by the district’s circular commercial buildings. Its lawns, seating areas and walking paths offer a break from the busy streets nearby. The park is also known for hosting public gatherings and cultural events, and its central location makes it an easy stop while exploring the area.
  2. Janpath Market: Janpath Market is a popular shopping street near Connaught Place, known for its colourful stalls and variety of affordable goods. Visitors can browse clothing, jewellery, bags, handicrafts, souvenirs and accessories. Bargaining is common at many stalls, and the market’s lively atmosphere makes it a distinctive part of Delhi’s shopping culture.
  3. Jantar Mantar: Situated a short distance from Connaught Place, Jantar Mantar is an eighteenth-century astronomical observatory commissioned by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. Its collection of large masonry instruments was designed to observe celestial movements and calculate astronomical positions. The site offers an opportunity to explore an important chapter in the history of Indian astronomy.
  4. Agrasen Ki Baoli: Agrasen Ki Baoli is a historic stepwell located within walking distance of Connaught Place. Its long flight of steps descends between high stone walls, creating a striking example of traditional water architecture in the middle of modern Delhi. The quiet, enclosed setting and geometric design make it a popular place for photography and heritage exploration.
  5. Gurudwara Bangla Sahib: One of Delhi’s most prominent Sikh places of worship, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is located near Connaught Place. The complex is recognised by its golden dome, white architectural features and sacred water tank, known as the Sarovar. Visitors can observe Sikh religious practices and experience the community kitchen, or langar, where meals are served free of charge to people from all backgrounds.
  6. India Gate: India Gate is a prominent war memorial situated along Kartavya Path, a short drive from Connaught Place. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the sandstone arch commemorates Indian soldiers who died during the First World War and other conflicts. The surrounding lawns and broad avenues are popular for evening walks, particularly when the monument is illuminated.
  7. Rashtrapati Bhavan and Kartavya Path: Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President of India, is an important landmark in New Delhi’s ceremonial district. Its monumental architecture and expansive grounds form part of the capital’s historic government precinct. Kartavya Path runs between Rashtrapati Bhavan and India Gate, featuring landscaped gardens, water channels and wide walkways. Access to specific buildings and gardens depends on official visitor arrangements.
  8. National Museum: Located on Janpath, the National Museum houses collections covering India’s art, archaeology and cultural history. Its galleries display sculptures, paintings, coins, jewellery, manuscripts and objects from different periods and regions. The museum offers a broad introduction to the artistic traditions and historical developments that have shaped the subcontinent.
  9. Palika Bazaar: Palika Bazaar is an underground market situated beneath Connaught Place’s outer circle. Its shops sell clothing, accessories, electronics and various consumer goods. The enclosed market has a distinctly different atmosphere from the open colonnades above, offering visitors another perspective on Connaught Place’s long-established retail scene.
