Best places to visit in South India in November featuring lush tea plantations, Kerala backwaters, temple architecture, tropical beaches and scenic hill landscapes.

Most travel guides will tell you November is post-monsoon across India. Clear skies, dry roads, easy travelling. For most of the country, that is true.

South India is the exception, and it catches people out every year.

While the rest of India dries out after the southwest monsoon, Tamil Nadu and parts of coastal Andhra get a second rainy season. The northeast monsoon arrives in mid-October and runs through December. Chennai receives more rain in November than in any other month of the year. So does Pondicherry. So does most of the Coromandel coast.

This does not make November a bad month for South India. It makes it a month where where you go matters more than when. The Western Ghats, interior Karnataka and the Hampi region sit in the rain shadow and stay dry, while the coast gets soaked. Get the geography right and November gives you some of the best travelling conditions of the year.

Here is how the region actually behaves, and the twelve places are worth your time.

South India Weather in November: What Actually Happens

The northeast monsoon, explained

The southwest monsoon that soaks Kerala from June to September retreats by late September. Around mid-October, the winds reverse. Moisture-laden air now moves in from the Bay of Bengal, and it hits the eastern coast first.

Tamil Nadu gets roughly 48 percent of its annual rainfall from this northeast monsoon. Coastal districts get more. Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Pondicherry are the wettest. The peak usually falls in the first three weeks of November, though it shifts year to year.

The rain in the region is not the constant grey drizzle of the southwest monsoon. It falls in heavy downpours in the middle of the night or during the day, then stops by morning. Cyclonic systems can form in the Bay in November, and while cyclones tend to move north, there is still enough risk that people on the coast should add an extra day to their travel schedule.

Where stays dry

The Western Ghats run north to south down the western edge of the peninsula, and they block most of the Bay moisture from reaching the interior.

Coorg, Chikmagalur, Hampi, Badami and most of northern Karnataka stay clear. The high hill stations, Ooty and Kodaikanal, catch some rain in the first half of the month but far less than the plains below them. Munnar and Wayanad sit on the western slopes and see mostly clear, green weather with the reservoirs still full from the southwest monsoon.

This is the counterintuitive part: in November, inland and western South India is drier than the coast. The opposite of what people expect.

Region by region

Region November temperature Rain risk Verdict
Coorg, Chikmagalur 15 to 28°C Low Excellent
Hampi, north Karnataka 18 to 30°C Very low Excellent
Ooty, Kodaikanal 9 to 21°C Low to medium Excellent
Munnar, Wayanad 15 to 25°C Low Excellent
Alleppey backwaters 23 to 31°C Medium Good
Madurai, Trichy, Thanjavur 22 to 31°C Medium Good
Chennai, Pondicherry 23 to 30°C High Plan around it
Kanyakumari, Rameswaram 24 to 30°C Medium to high Variable

If your dates are fixed and you want certainty, go west or go inland. If you want the coast, aim for the last week of November when the heaviest spells have usually passed.

12 Best Places to Visit in South India in November

1. Coorg, Karnataka

Abbey Falls surrounded by forest at Coorg, Karnataka in November

It’s harvest time in Coorg; in November, the coffee cherries turn red, and the scent spreads throughout the district. Having completed its course, the southwest monsoon has made the hills green at this time of the year, but on the other hand, the northeast monsoons rarely get here.

Mornings hover around 15°C, with mist lingering in the valleys until nine or ten. Afternoons are comfortable enough for walking.

Places to visit: Abbey Falls, Raja’s Seat, Namdroling Monastery at Bylakuppe, Dubare Elephant Camp, Talakaveri, Nisargadhama.

Best experiences: Coffee estate walks, homestay meals with Kodava families, the Namdroling evening prayers.

Ideal duration: 3-4 days.

How to reach: Fly to Mangalore or Bangalore. From Bangalore, the drive takes around six hours via Mysore, the more common route. Arrange a car rental in Bangalore in advance with a driver who knows the ghat section well.

Suggested package: Pick a route from our Karnataka tour packages.

2. Hampi, Karnataka

Virupaksha temple in hampi

Hampi is the safest bet on this list. It sits in a rain shadow so complete that the annual rainfall barely reaches 600mm, and almost none of it falls in November.

That matters because Hampi is a walking destination. The ruins are spread across 26 square kilometres of granite boulders, and you can cover them on foot or by bicycle. In summer, the stone radiates heat until well after dark. In November you can walk from Virupaksha Temple to the Vittala complex without wanting to lie down afterwards.

Places to visit: Virupaksha Temple, Vittala Temple with the stone chariot, Hampi Bazaar, Matanga Hill, Lotus Mahal, Queen’s Bath, Achyutaraya Temple.

Best experiences: Sunrise from Matanga Hill, coracle ride on the Tungabhadra, the Vittala musical pillars.

Ideal duration: 2-3 days.

How to reach: Nearest station is Hospet Junction, 13 km away, with overnight trains from Bangalore. Nearest airport is Hubli.

3. Munnar, Kerala

Rolling tea plantations across the Munnar high range in Kerala

Munnar in November is as green as it gets. The tea slopes have had four months of rain, and the colour is almost artificial. The high-range weather is cool, between 15 and 25°C, with clear mornings and the occasional afternoon cloud.

Neelakurinji blooms once every twelve years; therefore, treat any news on it with skepticism. The good news is that Eravikulam National Park has reopened after the calving season, so you may be able to spot the Nilgiri tahr.

Places to visit: Eravikulam National Park, Mattupetty Dam, Top Station, tea museum, Attukad Falls, Echo Point, Lakkom Falls.

Best experiences: travelling a trail in the tea garden, staying at the famous Top Station viewpoint before the fog settles in, and experiencing a stay at a plantation.

Ideal duration: 3-4 days

How to reach: Kochi is the nearest airport, about 110 km away and roughly four hours by road through Neriamangalam.

4. Ooty, Tamil Nadu

Ooty Lake and Nilgiri hills, one of the best places to visit in South India in November

November is a peaceful time in Ooty as compared to the tourist season in April and May. The weather is mild as most tourists have left and children return to school.

Daytime temperatures stay between 14 and 21 C, while nights can be chilly, with temperatures dropping to 9 C. Take this into account while packing. The Ghat road from Mettupalayam has 36 hairpin bends, and driving it can take a while during the first two weeks of the month if it has rained.

Places to visit: Doddabetta Peak, Government Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake, Pykara Lake and Falls, Rose Garden, Avalanche Lake, Wenlock Downs.

Best experiences: The Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam, tea estate walks around Coonoor, Avalanche for the quiet.

Ideal duration: 4-5 days.

How to reach: Coimbatore International Airport is the closest airport, 85 km away. Trains run to Mettupalayam for the toy train connection. For local sightseeing, book a car rental in Ooty ahead, or book one in Coimbatore if you are arriving by air.

Suggested package: Choose from our Ooty tour packages.

5. Wayanad, Kerala

wayanad

Wayanad receives around 3,000mm of rain a year, nearly all of it between June and September. By November the taps have turned off, but the landscape has not caught up yet. Waterfalls are still running, the forest is dense, and the coffee and cardamom estates are at their best.

The Bandipur stretch on the Bangalore route closes to traffic between 9 pm and 6 am to protect wildlife. Plan your departure around it.

Places to visit: Edakkal Caves, Chembra Peak, Banasura Sagar Dam, Soochipara Falls, Kuruva Island, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Pookode Lake.

Best experiences: The Edakkal petroglyph climb, the Chembra Heart Lake trek (permit booked ahead), and a dawn safari at Tholpetty.

Ideal duration: 3 to 4 days.

How to reach: Kozhikode is the nearest at 90 km, or Kannur at 120 km. From Bangalore, it is around 280 km through Mysore.

6. Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu

Kodaikanal Lake ringed by green hills in Tamil Nadu

Kodaikanal has a climate similar to Ooty but is definitely less crowded. Kodaikanal is less popular than Ooty and is ideal for tourists who want to explore on foot instead of by car.

Temperatures range from 12 to 21°C. The town is compact enough to cover on foot, saving you time and hassle.

Places to visit: Kodaikanal Lake, Coaker’s Walk, Bryant Park, Pillar Rocks, Guna Cave, Silver Cascade, Mannavanur Lake, Dolphin’s Nose.

Best experiences: Boating on the lake in the early morning, the Coaker’s Walk before the mist lifts, cycling the lake circuit.

Ideal duration: 3-4 days.

How to reach: The most practical arrival point is Madurai Airport, about 120 km away. Kodai Road is the closest railway station. Madurai to Kodaikanal car rental offers car transfers and hill-road booking services.

Suggested package: See our Kodaikanal tour packages.

7. Alleppey, Kerala

Houseboat on the Alleppey backwaters in Kerala

The backwaters are full in November, and the houseboats are running, but December and January rates have not kicked in yet. That gap is worth several thousand rupees a night on a premium boat.

There is some rain risk here, more than in Munnar and less than on the east coast. It usually comes as a short afternoon burst, which on a houseboat is no hardship at all.

Places to visit: Punnamada Lake, Alappuzha Beach, Krishnapuram Palace, Pathiramanal Island, Marari Beach.

See also  Memorable Things To Do in India

Best experiences: An overnight houseboat with the boat moored rather than moving after dark, a shikara through the narrow canals where the big boats cannot go, the toddy shops along the bank.

Ideal duration: 2-3 days, usually as part of a longer Kerala route.

How to reach: Kochi Airport is 85 km away. Alappuzha has its own railway station.

For groups travelling together, our Kerala group tours handle the houseboat booking and transfers as one arrangement.

8. Chikmagalur, Karnataka

Coffee estate slopes and mountain views at Chikmagalur, Karnataka

Chikmagalur does what Coorg does, without the weekend traffic from Bangalore. Coffee was first planted in India here, on the slopes of Baba Budangiri, and the estates still dominate the district.

Mullayanagiri, at 1,930 metres, is Karnataka’s highest peak, and the drive up is part of the appeal.

Places to visit: Mullayanagiri, Baba Budangiri, Hebbe Falls, Kemmangundi, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, Hirekolale Lake.

Best experiences: Sunrise at Mullayanagiri, an estate stay during harvest, the Bhadra safari.

Ideal duration: 3 days.

How to reach: Mangalore is the nearest airport, 150 km away. Bangalore is around 245 km by road.

9. Madurai and Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu

Sculpted gopuram of Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu

November brings the temple south down to a manageable level. Madurai runs 22 to 31°C instead of the 38°C it hits in May, and that changes the whole experience when you are walking barefoot on granite.

Rain risk is medium there, but it’s higher at Rameswaram since it sits on the coast. Build in flexibility rather than cancelling.

Places to visit: Meenakshi Amman Temple, Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, Gandhi Memorial Museum, Ramanathaswamy Temple, Dhanushkodi, Pamban Bridge.

Best experiences: The Meenakshi night ceremony, when the palanquin is carried between shrines; the drive out to Dhanushkodi; the 1,200-metre third corridor at Ramanathaswamy.

Ideal duration: 3-4 days for both.

How to reach: Madurai Airport offers connections to all major Metros. The Pamban Bridge leads to Rameswaram, located about 170 km from Madurai. A car rental in Madurai lets you travel between Madurai and Rameswaram and complete the temple itinerary.

Suggested package: Our Madurai tour packages cover the pairing.

10. Gokarna, Karnataka

Paradise Beach and the coastline at Gokarna, Karnataka in November

Gokarna’s beach season opens in November. The seas calm down, the shacks reopen, and the crowds that arrive in late December are still weeks away.

It is a temple town first and a beach destination second, which keeps it quieter and more modest than Goa two hours north.

Places to visit: Om Beach, Kudle Beach, Half Moon and Paradise beaches, Mahabaleshwar Temple, Mirjan Fort, Yana Rocks.

Best experiences: The cliff walk linking the four beaches, sunrise at Kudle, the Mahabaleshwar evening puja.

Ideal duration: 2-3 days.

How to reach: Goa’s Dabolim is the nearest airport, 140 km away. The Konkan Railway stops at Gokarna Road.

11. Thanjavur and Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu

Brihadeeswarar Temple vimana at Thanjavur, part of the Great Living Chola Temples

The Chola heartland works well in November for the same reason Madurai does. The Brihadeeswarar Temple courtyard is open granite with no shade, and 30°C is a very different proposition from 39°C.

Karthigai Deepam usually falls in late November or early December, when oil lamps light every temple and doorway in Tamil Nadu. If your dates line up, it is worth planning around.

Places to visit: Brihadeeswarar Temple, Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, Thanjavur Palace, Saraswathi Mahal Library, the nine Navagraha temples around Kumbakonam.

Best experiences: The Brihadeeswarar vimana at first light, the Navagraha circuit over three days, Thanjavur painting workshops.

Ideal duration: 3 days.

How to reach: Trichy Airport is the closest, at around 60 km from Thanjavur.

Suggested package: The circuit sits within our temple tour packages in India. See also our blog on the 10 most popular temples of South India.

12. Pondicherry, Puducherry

Auroville, Pondicherry, India

An honest note on this one. Pondicherry gets its heaviest rainfall of the year in November, averaging around 350mm. If your trip is in the first two weeks, expect afternoon downpours.

That said, the last week of November is often clear, and the town in light rain has its own appeal. The French Quarter is quiet, the cafes are warm, and there are no crowds on the Promenade.

Places to visit: White Town, Promenade Beach, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Auroville and Matrimandir, Paradise Beach, Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

Best experiences: Cycling the French Quarter grid, Auroville in the morning before the visitor centre fills, the seafront at dawn.

Ideal duration: 2-3 days.

How to reach: Chennai Airport is 160 km away. Villupuram is the nearest major railhead. Book a car rental in Pondicherry for the town and the Auroville run.

Suggested package: Browse our Pondicherry tour packages.

Festivals in South India in November

South India festival in November

Karthigai Deepam is the big one in Tamil Nadu. Oil lamps line every house and temple, and at Thiruvannamalai a beacon is lit on top of Arunachala hill that can be seen for miles. Usually late November or early December, depending on the lunar calendar.

Practical Notes for November Travel

Pack for two climates. A single day can start at 9°C in Ooty and end at 30°C in Coimbatore. Layers, not a heavy coat.

Carry a rain cover if the coast is on your route. A light jacket and a dry bag for camera gear. Umbrellas are useless in a Bay of Bengal squall.

Ghat roads need extra time. The Mettupalayam to Ooty climb, the Neriamangalam road to Munnar, and the Bandipur stretch to Wayanad all slow down after rain. Don’t plan a same-day arrival with a tight onward connection.

Build a buffer day for Chennai arrivals. Flight delays into Chennai in November are common enough to plan for.

Book Chembra and Eravikulam permits ahead. Daily numbers are capped at both.

Hill station rates climb from mid-December. November gives you the same weather for less.

For groups, our group tour packages spread transport and guide costs across the party. Travellers arranging their own stays can book car rental with a driver for the route alone.

FAQs

Q1. Is November a good time to visit South India?

Yes, for the hills and interior. Coorg, Hampi, Munnar, Ooty and Chikmagalur are at their best. The Tamil Nadu coast gets its heaviest rain of the year, so plan the east coast for late November or choose inland destinations.

On the eastern coast, yes. Tamil Nadu receives about 48 percent of its annual rainfall from the northeast monsoon between October and December, peaking in November. The Western Ghats and interior Karnataka stay largely dry.

Q3. Which is better in November, Kerala or Tamil Nadu?
Kerala for reliability. Its rain comes mainly from the southwest monsoon, which has finished by November. Tamil Nadu’s hill stations are excellent, but its coast carries real rain risk.

Five to six nights covers one region well. Eight to ten nights allows two states. Fourteen nights covers Tamil Nadu, Kerala and southern Karnataka at a reasonable pace.

Q5. What is the weather in South India in November?

Hill stations run 9 to 21°C. Interior Karnataka runs 18 to 30°C. Coastal areas run 22 to 31°C with humidity and rain on the eastern side.

Q6. Is November peak season in South India?

Not yet. Peak runs from mid-December to January. November is shoulder season, which means the same weather in most regions at noticeably lower rates.

Q7. What should I pack for South India in November?

Cotton clothing, one warm layer for hill evenings, closed walking shoes, a light rain jacket if the coast is included, and modest clothing for temple visits.

Q8. Are the backwaters good in November?

Yes. Water levels are high after the southwest monsoon, houseboats are operating, and rates sit below the December peak. Occasional afternoon showers are likely but short.
