Devipattinam is a coastal village & also a pilgrimage site located in Ramanathapuram district. The temple in this place is called Thilakeshwar or Navagraha temple, found on the ECR road towards the Thondi route. Many stories about this temple are very interesting to listen to. In the word Devipattinam, the word Devi means Goddess Devi, and Pattinam means city, and in this place, Goddess Devi killed the demon Mahishasura to end all his atrocities. Another epic is Lord Rama installed the nine stones Navagrahas – 9 planets in the seashore and worshipped before going to the war with demon Ravana, who kidnapped Sita – Rama’s wife.
Pilgrims believed that if they took a bath in this sea and worshipped the nine stones with nine rounds, all their problems related to their karma and doshas related to their astrology chart would be remedied. The right time to visit this place is in the morning, between 05:30 am and 08:30 am, because the stones are located inside the sea about 100m from the seashore. At this time, the sea level and tides are very low, so you can easily walk into the sea with the help of a small bridge from the seashore to view the stones at a depth of 2 – 4 feet below the sea level and worship the ‘Navagrahas’ – nine stones. After 12 pm, the water level rises and the nine stones get submerged under the water. This temple is undertaken by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments. Facilities for the pilgrims and tourists are not up to the mark, so we mostly recommend this place as an en route visit only or a day excursion.
