Most travel guides will tell you November is post-monsoon across India. Clear skies, dry roads, easy travelling. For most of the country, that is true.<\/p>\n

South India is the exception, and it catches people out every year.<\/p>\n

While the rest of India dries out after the southwest monsoon, Tamil Nadu and parts of coastal Andhra get a second rainy season. The northeast monsoon arrives in mid-October and runs through December. Chennai receives more rain in November than in any other month of the year. So does Pondicherry. So does most of the Coromandel coast.<\/p>\n

This does not make November a bad month for South India. It makes it a month where where you go matters more than when. The Western Ghats, interior Karnataka and the Hampi region sit in the rain shadow and stay dry, while the coast gets soaked. Get the geography right and November gives you some of the best travelling conditions of the year.<\/p>\n

The northeast monsoon, explained<\/h3>\n

The southwest monsoon that soaks Kerala from June to September retreats by late September. Around mid-October, the winds reverse. Moisture-laden air now moves in from the Bay of Bengal, and it hits the eastern coast first.<\/p>\n

Tamil Nadu gets roughly 48 percent of its annual rainfall from this northeast monsoon. Coastal districts get more. Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Pondicherry are the wettest. The peak usually falls in the first three weeks of November, though it shifts year to year.<\/p>\n

The rain in the region is not the constant grey drizzle of the southwest monsoon. It falls in heavy downpours in the middle of the night or during the day, then stops by morning. Cyclonic systems can form in the Bay in November, and while cyclones tend to move north, there is still enough risk that people on the coast should add an extra day to their travel schedule.<\/p>\n

Where stays dry<\/h3>\n

The Western Ghats run north to south down the western edge of the peninsula, and they block most of the Bay moisture from reaching the interior.<\/p>\n

Coorg, Chikmagalur, Hampi, Badami and most of northern Karnataka stay clear. Hampi is the safest bet on this list. It sits in a rain shadow so complete that the annual rainfall barely reaches 600mm, and almost none of it falls in November.<\/p>\n

That matters because Hampi is a walking destination. The ruins are spread across 26 square kilometres of granite boulders, and you can cover them on foot or by bicycle. In summer, the stone radiates heat until well after dark. In November you can walk from Virupaksha Temple to the Vittala complex without wanting to lie down afterwards.<\/p>\n

Munnar in November is as green as it gets. The tea slopes have had four months of rain, and the colour is almost artificial. The high-range weather is cool, between 15 and 25\u00b0C, with clear mornings and the occasional afternoon cloud.<\/p>\n

Neelakurinji blooms once every twelve years; therefore, treat any news on it with skepticism. The good news is that Eravikulam National Park has reopened after the calving season, so you may be able to spot the Nilgiri tahr.<\/p>\n

Temperatures range from 12 to 21\u00b0C. The town is compact enough to cover on foot, saving you time and hassle.<\/p>\n

An honest note on this one. Pondicherry gets its heaviest rainfall of the year in November, averaging around 350mm. If your trip is in the first two weeks, expect afternoon downpours.<\/p>\n

That said, the last week of November is often clear, and the town in light rain has its own appeal. The French Quarter is quiet, the cafes are warm, and there are no crowds on the Promenade.<\/p>\n
